Just like my ‘Loading Checklist’, this checklist was created after I forgot to properly level my tripod. I had to remove my aligned telescope and mount in order to level my telescope and start building everything up again.

So …

My initial setup checklist

  1. Install tripod oriented due North
  2. Install battery and splitter box
  3. Cover splitter box lights
  4. Add tripod-spreader and position goto-handheld holder
  5. Level tripod
  6. Fix mount and connect to battery
  7. Add counterweights
  8. Add telescope
  9. Collimate telescope
  10. When observing
    1. Install and connect handheld to mount
    2. Add finder scope
  11. When imaging
    1. Just in case: Remove the handheld and finder scope
    1. Install the guiding scope
    2. Install the guiding camera
    3. Install the image camera and the coma corrector
    4. Install the ASIAIR
      1. Connect to battery through convertor
      2. Connect directly to mount using EQMOD cable
      3. Connect to guiding camera
      4. Connect to image camera
    5. Install both dew shields
  12. Tidy up all cables
  13. Balance setup on both axis
  14. Park setup in home position

My alignment checklist when observing

  1. Align telescope and finder scope
  2. Switch on the mount (yes I forgot once)
  3. Polar align the mount
  4. 3 star align the telescope
  5. Optional polar align the telescope to fine-tune 3 star alignment

My alignment checklist when imaging

  1. Connect to ASIAIR through phone just to get accurate GPS location
  2. Connect to ASIAIR through tablet
  3. Focus image camera to good enough for plate solving
  4. Align mount through plate solving
  5. Switch on the mount (yes I forgot once)
  6. Connect mount and both cameras to ASIAIR
  7. Focus guiding scope to good enough for auto guiding
  8. Point telescope to bright star and focus Bathinov mask

My pre-imaging checklist for each target

  1. Point mount to target
  2. Calibrate guiding camera
  3. Start auto guiding
  4. Take a 60sec exposure image to double check image framing
  5. Check and time for meridian flip
  6. Check ditter parameters
  7. Set auto image sequence
